The most useful thing this group does about skills shortages is make its own people.
Training, Competency and Induction is a policy in our management system, and the procedures behind it cover inductions, consultation, communication and site inspections. In practice it means nobody works on one of our sites without the tickets for what they are doing and an induction they actually understood.
We pay for the training. Construction induction cards, plant tickets, high risk work licences, confined space and working at heights, asbestos removal training and supervisor qualifications. People come on as labourers and move up, and a significant number of our supervisors and managers started that way.
Understanding is the part most companies skip. A good deal of our workforce was not born here, and an instruction that is half followed on a site like ours is a serious risk. So toolbox talks get delivered in a way everyone genuinely follows, new people are paired with experienced ones, and supervisors check rather than assume. We have a policy specifically on engaging workers of non-English speaking background, because it matters that much.
Perfect Group acknowledges the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as Traditional Custodians of the country on which we live and work. We pay our respects to the Traditional Custodians and Elders past, present and future, and honour their connection to the land and ongoing contribution to society.
